Moving abroad with pets: what you need to know

Your pet does not travel in the container: it has its own paperwork, its own timeline and sometimes requirements that take months. That is why it pays to start with your pet before the furniture.

In short

To take a dog or cat out of Colombia, the ICA requires a Health Inspection Certificate (CIS), requested by a registered vet through the SISPAP system, plus the destination country’s rules, which may include a microchip, vaccines and tests months in advance. Moving Services coordinates this through Pet Services, its specialized partner company.

Start with the destination country

Each country sets its own rules for dogs and cats: microchip, rabies vaccination a set time ahead, antibody tests or official certificates. Some steps take months, so check them as soon as you set your travel date.

What Colombia requires for departure

  • An ICA Health Inspection Certificate (CIS) to leave the country.
  • A request through the SISPAP system, made by a vet registered with the ICA.
  • A health certificate and an up-to-date vaccination record.
  • Identification with a microchip compliant with ISO 11784.

How it fits with your move

Pets usually fly, in the cabin or the hold depending on size and airline, while household goods go by sea. We align the dates so your pet arrives when you do and does not wait in boarding.

For the pet’s paperwork we work with Pet Services, a company specialized in international pet transport.
