Colombia ⇄ United States

A move from Colombia to the United States usually travels by full container or groupage from Cartagena or Buenaventura, or by air for small volumes. Used household goods enter duty-free when you have owned and used them abroad for at least one year, declared on CBP Form 3299.

How your move travels to United States

Your destination coast decides the departure port: Florida, Texas and New York shipments leave from the Caribbean, California shipments from the Pacific, which avoids long inland legs inside the US.

Exclusive container

For full homes; your goods travel sealed from door to door.

Groupage (LCL)

You share a container and pay per cubic meter; a fit for small apartments.

Air freight

For urgent boxes or a few cubic meters you need on arrival.

  • Arrival: Seaports: Miami, Port Everglades, Houston, New York–New Jersey and Los Angeles
  • Arrival: Airports: Miami, New York (JFK), Houston and Los Angeles

What US Customs (CBP) asks for

For household goods arriving separately from the traveler, CBP uses the declaration for free entry of unaccompanied articles.

  • CBP Form 3299, signed by the person moving.
  • Used household effects are duty-free when used abroad for at least one year and not intended for sale or for another person.
  • Items bought abroad and used for less than a year are declared separately and may be dutiable.
  • Firearms, ammunition, alcohol and tobacco have their own boxes and rules.
  • Ocean shipments require an Importer Security Filing (ISF) before sailing; our freight forwarder files it.
  • Passport, visa or immigration status copy and a detailed inventory in English.

What not to pack for the United States

  • Food, seeds, plants and soil (USDA controls).
  • Wildlife products, leather goods and crafts with feathers or shells without permits.
  • Prescription drugs without a prescription and controlled substances.
  • Liquor and tobacco inside the household goods unless declared and paid.

Moving back from the United States to Colombia

Many Colombians return home after years in Florida, New York or Texas. Our agent collects at your US address, the shipment sails from a US port and our own customs broker clears it in Colombia, either as household goods or under the Law 1565 exemption if you hold the return certificate.

Questions about moving to United States

Can I ship new furniture to the US duty-free?

Not on the same terms as used goods. The exemption covers effects you used abroad for at least a year; new items or those used for less time are declared separately and may pay duty.

Which port works best if I am moving to Miami?

For South Florida we ship from Colombia’s Caribbean ports to Miami or Port Everglades, the most direct lanes.

Do I need to be in the US when the container arrives?

CBP requires a signed Form 3299 and your arrival details, so clearance normally happens once you are there. We time it to avoid extra storage charges.

Do you handle moves from the US to Colombia?

Yes, both directions. For returns we check whether you should clear as household goods or as a Law 1565 beneficiary.
