What Portugal requires for goods and cars
Portugal applies the EU personal property relief and adds its own regime for the vehicle of someone relocating.
- Household goods are exempt if you move your normal residence to Portugal and declare them within 12 months.
- Exempt goods may not be lent, rented or transferred for 12 months after the declaration.
- A vehicle is free of ISV if you lived abroad at least six months and owned it for at least six months before moving.
- The vehicle exemption is requested online on the Portal das Finanças within 12 months, one per person.
- Returning Portuguese citizens usually obtain a transfer-of-residence declaration from their consulate.
